Remembering a Legacy - 07/11/2017

Knowing what an inspiring and gracious leader Myron Atkinson was, especially to our title team, we are deeply saddened by his loss. Myron passed away on June 12th, 2017, at CHI St. Alexius Health in Bismarck.

Myron was born in Bismarck on September 22nd, 1927 where he rooted his life and began his legacy.

Myron graduated from Bismarck High School, then continued his education through Bismarck Junior College and the University of North Dakota with degrees in Business and Law.

Shortly after receiving his degree, Myron served in the U.S. Army from 1952-1954 during the Korean War. He then returned to Bismarck after his service to pursue his practices in law and business.

In 1956, Myron was one of the founders of North Dakota Guaranty and Title Company. Serving our company as the president until his retirement in 1992, it was evident that he was a man of great accomplishment. His retirement did not stop him from being involved in the company. Myron served on The Board of Directors until his passing, which allowed him to visit the offices periodically and check up on the well-doing of the company he began. It was clear that NDGT and its employees meant a great deal to him.

Other business ventures Myron made a part of his life included real estate development, radio and television broadcasting, and mobile home park construction and sales. He was a Director of Norwest Bank in Bismarck for 21 years. Throughout the years Myron also served as The President of the Bismarck Chamber of Commerce, United Way, St. Alexius Medical Center Lay Advisory Board and many other local organizations. Being that Myron had a lifelong interest in encouraging economic development in the Bismarck area, he was one of the organizers and later served as chair of the Bismarck-Mandan Development Association.

Myron was not only interested in the business and development of his local community, he also had a special calling for education. He taught real estate courses at both Bismarck State College and the University of Mary in works with the North Dakota Real Estate Commission, of which he was a member and president. He served several times as President of the University of Mary Board of Regents, was a founding Director and later President of the Bismarck Area Catholic Education Foundation and was President on the Bismarck State College Foundation.

Myron was elected to the North Dakota House of Representatives in 1968 and served until 1976 when he chose not to run. For six years he was Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee. He also held many positions in both the local and state Republican Party including serving as Chairman of the North Dakota Republican Party from 1981-1983. At the time of his death, Myron was actively involved in many projects including the Bismarck Historical Society, Atkinson Nature Park, and restoration of Camp Hancock.

Having the ambition to furthering the community’s well-being started in Myron’s family before his time. He came from a long line of civil servants, his father was Bismarck City Auditor and his grandfather was Bismarck City Engineer. Myron will be remembered for his great contributions to Bismarck and its surrounding communities.

Alongside Myron’s dedication to his professional life, he was also very devoted to his family, making them a top priority. It all began when he married Marjory Barth at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit, where he attended daily Mass for 56 years. Together they created a wonderful family of 7 children who live their lives to serve the prosperity of others, such as Myron did.

Even though Myron’s time with us has come to a close, he will be truthfully missed by all of those who had the pleasure of knowing him. North Dakota Guaranty and Title Co. will do its best to continue Myron’s legacy through his brilliant values and work ethic that shined so brightly to us all.
